The jury is in on the importance of having an opportunity to continue giving back to our fellow human beings—and all the causes and needs they represent. This is one major finding of the 2005 MetLife Study that links the importance of making a difference in others’ lives with one’s own emotional and physical well-being.

McLean Family - Vancouver Washington

Visit this community on the web - illustration of Washington State with the location of Touchmark's Vancouver retirement community highlightedVolunteering is a way of life for the McLean family of Vancouver, Washington, who won’t let a week go by without making a trip to Waterford at Fairway Village to visit with residents. Each Tuesday, Kelly brings five-year-old Teyline and one-year-old Aderyn to participate in games and crafts. On weekend mornings, Kevin plays cards with a few women, paints their fingernails, and reminisces. Occasionally, the entire family comes on weekends. “This is a real amazing family,” says Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Kellie Wagnild. “There are always lots of smiles and hugs when they visit.”

Similarly, Touchmark recruits volunteers and provides opportunities for people to assist with programs and services. The process for volunteering is very much like applying for a job at Touchmark: Interested volunteers contact the community, fill out an application, and proceed through reference and background checks, orientation, and training. Touchmark places a high value on finding an exact fit for every qualified volunteer.
